Victor Johnson has been playing piano since 1985 when he was four years old, and officially started taking lessons at six when his Aunt Meg, a keyboardist in several Detroit bands, began visiting his house on Saturday mornings with homemade chocolate chip cookies, the world’s most effective learning incentive. It was then he discovered that he had “perfect pitch”, the ability to identify any note being played on a piano with his eyes closed. Ever since then, he has had a lifelong connection to the instrument.
Later graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he began studying the physics of strings in 2004, his life path to both piano performance and piano technology was officially set in motion. In 2014, he specialized in piano restoration work for several years, rebuilding and refinishing antique pianos to sound and play like new again, once even fully restoring a piano that had been hit by a tornado!
As a tuner and technician, his work can be heard everywhere from Prince’s pianos at Paisley Park, to concert pianos for artists including Stevie Wonder, Jack White, Jacob Collier, John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Kenny Barron, Mannheim Steamroller, Davina and the Vagabonds, Dashboard Confessional, and Bleachers, among many other homes, schools, churches, recording studios and concert halls. As a musician, Victor has performed and toured internationally, in Europe, Asia and South America. He currently performs with the groups You Oughta Know (1990s Dance Music) and Malamanya (Vintage Afro-Latin Music).
His hobbies include learning to speak and write in Mandarin Chinese, playing chess, and graphic design/video art/animation. Victor’s favorite things about being a piano tuner is getting to see and meet everyone’s pet cats and dogs, giving clients’ kids quick 1-minute lessons on how to play Nintendo video game songs on the piano, and getting to make everyone’s pianos sound amazing so they are more fun and inspiring to play!
